Many people do not realize that to keep their water heater functioning properly they need to perform simple water heater maintenance. Just as you need to do this with your own body by seeing a doctor, or for your car regularly, it is an important tool to longevity. When water is pumped into your water heater’s tank, dirt and minerals settle on the bottom. This can quickly cause your heater to lose its effectiveness and if completely neglected, reduce the years of use you can have. Getting a bucket and hose are tools that will help you. Don’t forget also gloves to protect your hands.
If you don’t know where the heater is, you can look in garage or laundry room. Some have it in their water heater maintenance. Do you know if it is run by electricity or gas? It will be noted by the manufacturer. In addition you can see if there is a pilot light when you check it. You need to turn off the connections. Do you know where the shut off valve is located? The shut off valve is found on the top of the water heater. The pressure release is also found on the top generally. Check that the pipe that exits isn’t blocked. Find the spout where you can put a hose.
Did you turn off the circuit breaker? Put your gloves on and when the hose is put on the hot water heater maintenance you can open the pressure release valve. This can take up to twenty five minutes or so to empty. At that point you can turn the water on to flush it out.
After this you can turn the water drain off and screw the hose off. Get the bucket to put under the drain. You can then turn on the water that goes into the tank and drain. Is the water that goes into the bucket clean? If the answer is yes, at that point you can turn off the water drain and proceed to close the release valve. Then you can refill your tank again with water and put back the electrical connection or gas. This maintenance will help your heater as well as finances.
