A roof window or skylight is an attractive feature in a room. It allows fabulous views and in a room that would otherwise be completely closed in like lofts,it is needed for ventilation. They however come with a challenge in terms of how to dress them in order to reduce the sunlight and heat they let in as well as noise. Skylight blinds serve this purpose. The blinds also bring down costs related to energy. In cooling a room, they reduce the use of air conditioning systems and fans. There are those that darken a room and absorb heat in the fabric and there are those that filter lights to keep away UV rays.
Sun screens for standard, typical windows are a dime a dozen but those for roof windows can be difficult to get and in the right size. They hang differently from the way sun shields for other windows hang. They stay in place with the help of side rails or tension.
With upright windows, the sun shades are placed on the outer side skylight blinds. These windows are opened towards the outside and they do not get in the way of the sun shades. This is not the case with skylights which usually have their hinges at the center. The sun shields therefore need to be installed in such a way that they are on the inner side of the sash if they are to be opened without difficulty.
There are different kinds of shades for roof windows. The most popular type is blackout blinds. They are loved for their ability to completely remove all sunlight and a lot of heat and noise. They are usually custom made. They come as a cartridge with aluminum side rails and are adjustable. Those with plastic rails will soon become loose and faded because of the heat of the sun and are best avoided.
Screens made from pleated fabric that is fixed on a length of cord or twine is another option. These are pleated blinds. The fabric is not a sufficient buffer and these are not very popular. Roller blinds are cost effect and more efficient and are thus more popular. They are made simply around a loaded container and it is the tension in it that keeps them in place at the window. Clips or side pieces are used to maintain them in the right place.
